Circle involutes as gear teeth profile curves (L. Euler)

The boundaries of the gear teeth (red and green) are involutes of the two base circles (black). The two radii determine the transmission ratio. The pairs of red and green boundaries touch each other along the red and green line, respectively. The joint tangent at the common point is perpendicular to these lines. The red and the green line are common tangents of both circles.
